In the
period between the two world wars, Timisoara had three important
personalities in the field of Italian Studies: George Calinescu, Ioachim
Miloia and Silvia Guarnieri. In this city, there was an important
Italian community and an Italian Consulate.
When
Prof. Maria Belisare came to Timisoara from Bucharest, a solid tradition
of teaching Italian was established at the University and at the House
of Culture, from the 50s up to the 70s when Prof. Belisare retired.
After this, Italian will be taught by Prof. Iosif-Cheie Pantea at the
University and by Prof. Viorica Balteanu at the Cultural-Scientific
(Popular) University of Timisoara.
The
Italian Section was established in 1997, coordinated by Lecturer Dr.
Viorica Balteanu. Teachers like Prof. Dr. Ileana Oancea, Lecturer
Daniele Pantaleoni, Lecturer Maria Luisa Lombardo and Assistant Lecturer
Afrodita Carmen Cionchin have been working hard to ensure the proper
training for the 80 students who have chosen Italian as a minor subject
and the 250 students from other faculties who chose Italian as an
elective course.
More than
30 students benefited from grants and spent training stages in Italy.
The
Italian Section has bilateral conventions and Socrates partnerships with
the Universities of Udine, Catania, Padova and Perugia.
The
DANTE ALIGHERI Society
The Dante
Aligheri Committee of Timisoara was founded in July 1991. Ever since
then, more than 120 manifestations devoted to the Italian culture and
civilization have been organized, attended by a large public. The
coordinators of the activities of this society are Prof. Dr. Iosif
Cheie-Pantea (President), Lecturer Dr. Viorica Balteanu
(Vice-President), Prof. Dr. Ileana Oancea (Secretary).
Until
2002, the central board of the Dante Aligheri Society in Rome has
already given 12 grants to teachers and students who worked in the
committee of Timisoara.
Many
celebrated guests honoured us with their presence (conferences,
exhibitions, book presentations, concerts, etc). From Italy came Prof.
Lorenzo Renzi, Teresa Ferro, Benito De Sivo, Gianpaoolo Bonghello,
Giuseppe Piccillo; musicians Enrico Cannata and Gianluca Vanzelli;
writers Fulvio Tonizza and Corrado Calabro. From Romania came Acad.
Alexandru Balaci; librarianship expert Ion Iliescu; art critics Deliu
Petroiu and Dorina Parvulescu; musicians Nicolae Boboc, Rodica Miloia,
teodora Ciucur, Elena Gaja, Felicia Tonea, Lia Dobric, Manuela
Mihailescu, Dragos Mihailescu, Gheorghe Costin, Flora Toth, Gheorghe
Chiculita, Ovidiu Giulvezan; artists Lidia Ciolac, Suzana Fantanariu,
Eugenia Dumitrascu, Kazinczki Gabor, Ortansa Ilie, Daniel Ursachi;
writers Coleta De Sabata, Anghel Dumbraveanu, Adrian Dinu Rachieru,

In
1992-1994, the committee was honoured by the presence of their
excellencies Bernardo Uguccini and Giuseppe de Michelis di Slonghello,
ambassadors of Italy in Bucharest and Prof. Urbano Urbinati and Lucio
Godi, directors of the Italian Institute in Bucharest. To acknowledge
the high value of the activity sustained by the members of the Dante
Aligheri Society in Timisoara, their excellencies gave special visas to
students and participants to musical contests in Italy where they were
awarded important prizes.
The
Italian Section and the Dante Aligheri committee work in the Dante
Aligheri Hall (room 329) in the main building of the University, a hall
provided with all the necessary equipment courtesy of the Italian
Embassy and the Dante Aligheri Society in Rome.
