  1. The description of the specialization

The specialization Linguistics and didactics of French as a foreign language (Linguistique et didactique du FLE) is the research field in which the graduates of the Faculty of Letters (the sections of modern languages) are introduced to the most recent didactic approaches of French from the perspective of some new linguistic and pragmatic theories.

 

  1. The legal framework of the specialization

The program is organized by the Department of Romance Languages of the Faculty of Letters, Philosophy and History in the University of the West, Timişoara, according to the Education Law no. 84/1995 and to the Emergency Order no. 143 given by the Ministry of Education and Research on 21st September 2000.

 

  1. Information on self-evaluation

    • The members of the evaluation committee:

  • Ph. D. Professor Ileana Oancea – the dean of the Faculty of Letters, Philosophy and History and the director of the specialization

  • Ph. D. Professor Maria Ţenchea – deputy dean

  • Ph. D. Associate Professor Aurelia Turcu – the deputy director of the specialization

  • The self-evaluation of the specialization Linguistique et didactique du FLE was done between 5th and 10th April 2002. As a result of the process of self-evaluation, it was found that the subject matter was appreciated by the students, since it offered them the possibility to improve the theoretical and practical knowledge they acquired in their undergraduate courses.

  • The specialization Linguistique et didactique du FLE, with an instruction period of 3 semesters, started to function in the academic year 2001-2002, with a number of 7 subsidized places and 4 tuition fee places.

  • The director of the specialization is Ph. D. Professor Ileana Oancea, who has a lot of scientific and didactic experience in the field of general linguistics, Romance linguistics and stylistics, and who is also Ph.D. coordinator in the fields mentioned above.

 

  1. The mission, the objectives and the specific character of the specialization

  • The mission of the specialization Linguistique et didactique du FLE is to ensure the students’ didactic training in accordance with the national and the international requirements of the field.

  • Its objectives reflect the mission formulated above.

  • On the didactic level, the objectives are:

    • the acquisition of various didactic approaches of French as a foreign language

    • the thorough study of the modern methods of teaching French in the context of the requirements imposed by the education reform

  • On the scientific level, the objectives are:

    • the thorough study of the linguistic and methodological theories which are the basis of the new types of didactic approach

    • the improvement of the theoretical knowledge in the fields of textual linguistics and of pragmatics of the discourse, thus preparing the students for the process of writing their M.A. dissertation

  • The specific character of the specialization is made clear by the definition mentioned in A.1: Linguistics and didactics of French as a foreign language.

The admission procedure:

 

Admission depends, on the one hand, on the results of an examination structured according to the topics and to the reading list below and, on the other hand, on an average mark (the graduation exam and the 4 years of study). The admission mark for the subsidized places is established in decreasing order, and the admission mark for the tuition fee places reflects the decreasing order of the marks, after the occupation of the subsidized places.

 

  • The entrance examination takes place on 27th July. The enrolment period: 15th-22nd July.

  • Number of places: 10 subsidized places. 5 tuition-fee places

 

Topics for the examination “Linguistics and didactics”

  • The theory of the discourse: the formal marks of the discourse (from the class of the pronouns, of the verbal categories of tense and mood, modality, the formal marks from the class of the adverbs). Their semantic interpretation and contextual distribution.

  • The theme of the language acts and their application in the didactics of French as a foreign language

  • Traditional didactics and functional didactics – a comparative perspective.

  • The most important linguistic theories in the methodological evolution of teaching and learning French.

The curriculum includes the following courses:

  • The pragmatics of the literary discourse

  • Linguistics and didactics

  • Anthropology and didactics

  • Cultural anthropology and French civilization

  • Written and oral communication

  • Contrastive analysis and translation

  • Linguistic system and innovation

  • The hermeneutics of the literary discourse

  • French for specific purposes

During the three semesters, the students benefit from guidance, documentation and research.

Semester I: 14 weeks – 12 hours/ a week = 168 hours

Semester II: 14 weeks – 12 hours/ a week = 168 hours

Semester III: 12 weeks – 12 hours/ a week = 144 hours

Sessions of exams:

  • Semesters I-III: 4 weeks

Holidays:

  • The winter holidays: 2 weeks

  • 1 week after the winter session of exams

  • 3 days off for the Easter

  • The summer holidays: 10 weeks

 Dissertation:

  • Announcing the theme of the dissertation: semester II

  • Writing the dissertation: semesters II and III

  1. The material resources and the infrastructure

The activities of the specialization Linguistics and didactics take place in the University of the West, Timişoara, where the teachers and the students have at their disposal the logistics necessary to conduct scientific research in the fields mentioned above. The scientific information and the documentation are ensured by the University’s Central Library, by the Library of the French Reading Room and by the library of the French Cultural Centre. The students’ information, documentation and didactic training are also ensured by the computer laboratories (the VIFAX laboratory and the laboratory of terminology) and by the multi-media resources of the French Cultural Centre.
