General information

1.      The description of the specialization

The 1-year program New Trends in the German Studies, offered by the Department of German of the Faculty of Letters and History, deals with the recent trends in the field of the German literature and linguistics, from an inter-cultural and inter-disciplinary perspective. It aims at giving the graduates of the German section the research instruments which are necessary in their approach to the German language and literature from an inter-cultural and inter-disciplinary perspective.

 2.      The legal framework of the specialization

The 1-year program New Trends in the German Studies is organized by the Department of German of the Faculty of Letters and History in the University of the West, Timişoara, according to the Education Law no. 84/1995 and to the Emergency Order no. 143 given by the Ministry of Education and Research on 21st September 2000.

 The specialization New Trends in the German Studies, with an instruction period of two semesters, has been functioning since the academic year 1999/2000, with a number of 11 students, of which 4 are tuition-fee payers.

 The mission, the objectives and the specific character of the specialization

a)      Mission

This program aims at continuing the major degree and at offering the students better opportunities of integration into various professional and research fields. In this way, the program is meant to facilitate the students' integration into the present Romanian society, laying, at the same time, a solid foundation for those who want to get a doctoral degree in our country or abroad.

 b)      Objectives

The objectives reflect the mission formulated above.

On the didactic level, the objectives are:

  • to improve the students’ knowledge with current notions from the field of research into the German language and literature

  • to combine the fundamental and applied research, which is achieved by the diversity of the disciplines

  • to conduct research activity that should comply with the standards of the European academic world

  • to accelerate the students’ process of integration into the present Romanian society

 c)      Specific character

The approach of the literary and linguistic German phenomena offers a specific perspective, based on the interaction between inter-disciplinarity, inter-textuality, hermeneutics, semiotics, pragmatics, etc.

Besides the tenured teachers from the Department of German, there are other prestigious associate teachers involved in this programme: Ph. D. Professor Karl Stocker (LM University in Munchen), Ph. D. ProfessorKurt Rein (LM University in Munchen), Rainer Schubert Ph. D. (Vienna), Astrid Meyer-Schubert Ph. D. (Berlin), Ph. D. Professor Horst Schuller (Lucian Blaga University in Sibiu).

 2. The admission procedure:

Admission depends on the results of an examination structured according to the topics and to the reading list below. The admission mark for the subsidized places is established in decreasing order, and the admission mark for the tuition-fee places reflects the decreasing order of the marks, after the occupation of the subsidized places.

During the whole instruction period, the students benefit from guidance, documentation and research.

The structure of the academic year/ The graduation exam

  • Semester I: 14 weeks – 12 hours/ a week (168 hours)

  • Semester II: 10 weeks – 12 hours/ a week  (120 hours)

Session of exams: 4 weeks

Holidays:

  • The winter holidays: 2 weeks

  • 1 week after the winter session of exams

  • 3 days off for the Easter

Dissertation:

  • Announcing the theme of the dissertation: semester I

  • Writing the dissertation (about 100 pages): semesters I and II

  • Defending the dissertation: 15th – 30th June       

The material resources and the infrastructure

The courses of the specialization New Trends in the German Studies are delivered in the rooms 248 and 401 in the University of the West, Timişoara, where the teachers and the students have at their disposal the logistics necessary to conduct scientific research in the field mentioned above.

This specialization is integrated into the activity carried on by the Group of Inter-disciplinary Research into the German Culture in Banat, which functions as part of the Department of German, benefiting from the documentary support of:

  • the University’s Central Library in Timişoara

  • the Library of the Goethe Institute in Bucharest

  • Austria Library in Timişoara and Bucharest

  • the Library of DAAD (the German Service of Academic Exchange) in the University of the West and the Polytechnics University in Timişoara

  • the Archives of the Diocesan Museum in Timişoara
